IMPORTANT UBC HOCKEY ALUMNI MESSAGE

23 Jan

Alumni & Friends,

As most of you are well aware, UBC Men’s Hockey is in danger of being either relegated or terminated by the start of the 2015/2016 season.  However, there is still lots of time and reason for hope as we work on alleviating our current issues.

We understand the needs of the Athletic department and the need for us as a program to adapt. We can move forward. We will move forward.

As alumni and supporters of UBC Athletics, and the hockey program, we need to stay positive and focus on the task at hand. Will it be difficult at times? Most certainly. But I can assure everyone that staying positive, working together to find a solution, and establishing solidarity as a group will only make us stronger and more viable to UBC Athletics as they go through stage 2 of their review process.

There is plenty at stake for tens of thousands of people who are proud alumni and passionate about hockey at UBC. Our players have remained focused and continue to work hard every day. We must support them and we must lead them.

Rules of engagement:
1. Keep things positive in public forums. Encourage our athletes and supporters.
2. What’s done is done. Get over it. Move forward.  We can fix this.
3. Communicate with your fellow alumni. There is a strong bond. Continue to foster and develop those relationships.
4. Realize that we all need to get on the bus.
5. We are leaders and strong contributors to our communities. Let’s set an example.

Thank you

Thunderbirds – Huskies Preview

14 Jan

Following a two game sweep on the road in Lethbridge, the Thunderbirds will take to the road for a second straight week as they face the Saskatchewan Huskies.  The Huskies sit in 2nd place after being swept by the Alberta Golden Bears with a record of 14-6 (28 points).  Meanwhile the Thunderbirds sit in 5th place just 4 points back of the Huskies with an 11-7-2 (24 points) record.  CWUAA standings.

Last weekend the Thunderbirds got scoring from top line of Max Grassi – Scott MacDonald – Brad Hoban finishing with 3 goals and 9 assists on the weekend.  Hoban had the hattrick on Friday night with Grassi and MacDonald each contributing with 3 assists.  On Saturday night the line of Jessi Hilton – Scott Wasden – Cole Wilson accounted for 2 of the ‘Birds three goals and were dominant from start to finish 5 on 5.  Ben Schmidt also had  a solid performance on Saturday night as he set up two goals.  UBC team statisitcs.

In net, both Jordan White and Steven Stanford have been solid and played great last weekend.  If the ‘Birds are going to walk out of the Rutherford arena with points they will need both to be sharp and give the team a chance to win.  Thus far their stats have been very similar with GAA hovering around 2.65 and Save % above .900.

The Rutherford arena has proved to be a tough place for opposing teams to play this season as the Huskies are 8-1.  However, that lone loss came just two weeks ago falling to the Manitoba Bisons 4-2.  UBC has had some success on the road this year at 6-3-1.

Up front the Huskies boast two very good offensive lines and two very good checking lines.  Last year’s leading scorer, Derek Hulak, has come on as of late and has struggled through injuries this season.  Joining his line are first year forwards, Jimmy Bubnick and Brandon Herrod.  Huskies leading scorer, Kyle Bortis plays the wing with Brennan Bosch and Andrew Bailey. Huskies team stats.

Defensively, the Huskies are very deep.  Leading the way is 2nd year defenseman, Matthew Delahay, along with Zack Stebner, and Brett Ward.  They are a very strong group that moves the puck well and plays physical.  Look for Delahay and Stebner to be on the ice for the majority of the shifts against the ‘Birds top lines.

In net, Ryan Holfeld has played in all 20 of the Huskies games and has been very solid with 14 wins.  The ‘Birds will have to provide a good presence at the net and shoot whenever the opportunity presents itself.

This weekend poses a very good challenge for the Thunderbirds as they can gain some major ground in the CWUAA standings and anchor themselves into the top four.

Puck drops in Saskatoon at the Rutherford arena 7pm Friday and Saturday.

Justin McCrae and the UBC Thunderbirds look to get back on track in Lethbridge this weekend

10 Jan

This weekend, the UBC Thunderbirds look to get back on track after 6-2 and 2-1 OTL to the University of Calgary Dinos at Doug Mitchell Arena.  As a result, UBC sits tied for fifth with the University of Regina Cougars at 9-7-2, just two points back of Calgary (11-7) and 3 points back of the Manitoba Bisons (10-5-3) who sit in the all important 3rd and 4th positions (host first round of playoffs vs. 5th & 6th).

For the Thunderbirds to get back on track, it starts with their core group of 3rd and 4th year players.  Captain Justin McCrae returned to the lineup last weekend after two months off and finished the weekend set with an assist in a losing cause.  Assistant captain, Scott Wasden (McCrae’s line mate) will also be relied upon heavily this weekend to add some offensive punch to the ‘Birds scoring attack.  Wyatt Hamilton, Nate Fleming, and Cole Wilson will need to continue their dominance at even strength and the newly formed checking line of Joe Antilla, Cole Pruden, and Dillon Wagner will need to impose their will on the Lethbridge defensemen and provide energy to the team.

Although the Pronghorns have struggled this season, they will be a tough test and the T-Birds will need to be in near playoff form in order to come home with 4 much needed points.

Puck drops Friday and Saturday night at 7pm at the Nicholas Sheridan Arena.
